Useful Tips for Your Boat Tour in Berlin

When is the best time for a boat tour in Berlin?

The ideal time for an adventure on the water is during the peak season between May and September. Since demand for boat rentals is extremely high, especially on sunny weekends, and these dates are often booked out weeks in advance, we recommend making your reservation as early as possible via our website. A local "insider tip" is to book tours on weekday evenings; the water is much calmer then, and you can take advantage of the magical "Golden Hour" light for unforgettable photos.

Can you go boating in Berlin during the winter?

A boat tour in Berlin is also an extremely charming experience in winter and is considered an absolute local highlight. While the city settles into a quiet pace, special event boats offer a cozy atmosphere with crackling fireplaces, snug blankets, homemade mulled wine (Glühwein), and winter catering options. Please note, however, that self-drive boats are not available in winter, as safety in ice and cold temperatures is our priority. Corresponding winter tours are offered exclusively as guided trips with an experienced skipper for groups of 10 or more.

Do I need a license for a boat tour in Berlin?

In Berlin, you can rent many motorboats up to 15 HP without a license, making water sports accessible to everyone. For more powerful yachts or very large vessels, however, an inland sport boat license (SBF Binnen) is mandatory. If you do not have a license but still want to experience a large ship, you can easily book a boat with a skipper through us and lean back while a professional takes the helm.

Is grilling allowed on the boat during the trip?

Yes, on many of our specially prepared rafts (e.g. Goldelse & Beluga) and houseboats, grilling is explicitly permitted and is a true highlight of any summer day. In most cases, modern gas grills are already installed on board, and the required gas is automatically included in the rental price. You can find specific details in the description of each boat. Simply select the "BBQ Boats" (Grillboote) category when booking to ensure your vessel is equipped for a barbecue on the water.

Where can I dock during my tour in Berlin?

There are numerous public docking points that self-drivers with sport boats can use for a short shore leave. However, please note that larger event boats with skippers, such as party boats or large ships, are not allowed to stop spontaneously at any pier. Such docking maneuvers must be registered in advance, and the fees charged by the respective pier owner are usually passed on to the guest. Therefore, please plan such stops with us well in advance of your tour.

Can I explore Berlin's city center independently (e.g., with a houseboat)?

Navigating through the government district independently, especially with a houseboat, is very difficult in practice and subject to strict regulations. In the city center, an on-board radio and the corresponding radio license (UBI) are mandatory during the day. Without this equipment, passage in the area between the Mühlendamm Lock and the Charlottenburg Lock is prohibited, or only permitted in the extremely early morning or late evening hours. We generally advise against it and recommend a boat with a skipper for city tours, or staying in the quieter districts outside the center with a houseboat.
